What Operating System Will You Be Using 1 Year From Now?

Wednesday August 29, 2012
With Windows 8 coming out soon, and the non-stop comments threats about moving to Linux or a Mac after a bad round of updates (sort of) on the last Patch Tuesday, it got me wondering... what operating system do you think you'll be using a year from now?

What Operating System(s) Will You Be Using 1 Year From Now?

Be sure to check that last box if your new OS is different than what you're using today.
Have you ever made a major operating system change? How did it go? Why did you change?

The Gray Screen

Wednesday August 29, 2012
Windows computers have blue screens, black screens, and I've even heard rumors of red screens... of course I've also heard rumors of Bigfoot.
Macs have a gray screen and since I know some of you Windows users, who I normally cater to, also "know people" who own Macs, I thought this excellent troubleshooting guide by our own Tom Nelson, About.com Guide to Macs, might interest you:
Mac Stalls on Gray Screen at Startup: Troubleshooting Mac Startup Problems
So yes, some rumors are true: your... I mean your friend's... Mac can crash. No, probably not as often as your PC, but it happens.
If you do own a Mac, please check out Tom's other stuff on About.com: Macs. His site is next to none in his area of expertise and should be your first source for any Mac related tutorials and news.

Firefox 15 Now Available

Wednesday August 29, 2012
Firefox LogoToday Mozilla is releasing the latest version of their Firefox browser: Firefox 15.
The biggest improvement over v14 is better memory management. Yes, this has also been the "big" improvement in the last few releases of Firefox, but in Firefox 15 they've fixed a memory leak problem that occurs with add-ons, which should be a very big deal.
Some other improvements in v15: better graphics, support for a new audio codec, "invisible" updates, and much more.
You can download Firefox v15 here, or just watch for the notification next time you're using the browser.
See Firefox 15: Better Graphics, Painless Updates by InformationWeek for more details.
If you're really interested in what goes in to a major update like this, see the Firefox v15.0 Bug Fixes page. It's quite the list.

Other downloads, like nForce or ION drivers, GeForce drivers for non-Windows operating systems, and much more, can be found here.
Tip: If you're unsure about what NVIDIA drivers you need, head over to the GeForce Drivers page and click on the big green AUTO-DETCT YOUR GPU button for help.
Important: This NVIDIA driver is a beta release, meaning it has not been tested in-the-wild by NVIDIA, nor certified by Microsoft. I recommend that you wait for the final, WHQL release of this driver before installing it unless it fixes a serious issue you've been having or you're very interested in a new feature and are willing to take the risks of using a driver that might still have some issues. The latest WHQL certified NVIDIA GeForce driver was v301.42 [32-bit 7/Vista].
Note: If you're using a recent version of NVIDIA's GeForce drivers, just right-click on the NVIDIA icon in the system tray and choose Check for updates.... You can download and install the driver automatically from there. If you want to be prompted for beta driver updates, be sure to check the appropriate box in the Preferences tab.

Blue Screen of Death ErrorAnyone who regularly uses a computer knows all about error messages. Those of you who are also Windows users probably see more than your fair share of them. As a computer service professional, I see more error messages than anyone should in a lifetime!
Listed below are troubleshooting guides for some of the more common error messages that my readers and clients see on their computers.

Reverse Damages and Mistakes

Reverse MistakesEveryone makes mistakes... and Microsoft (and other software makers) know that. No matter if you've made a bad change in the registry or emptied the Recycle Bin after deleting your only copy of a report due the next day, there are ways to "undo" the damage.

Repairing & Reinstalling Windows

Windows 7 Startup GraphicMicrosoft knows that problems happen - which is why it provided tools like Safe Mode, Startup Repair, and Recovery Console. You can see complete walkthroughs below.
Sometimes, however, the only solution to some Windows problems involves a complete reinstallation of the operating system.
Below are step-by-step guides to each kind of installation, complete with images and detailed instructions. These resources make a traditionally complicated procedure easy enough for anyone to take on!

Working Inside Your Computer

Hard DriveIf you've never done it, opening up your computer to service or replace something inside can seem overwhelming. The thought alone sends many people speeding toward the expensive repair shop.
Working inside your computer is much easier than you may believe, especially when you have a little help. These resources will help you get in and out of your computer like an expert!

Testing Hardware & Software

MultimeterA big part of solving nearly any computer problem is testing, especially when a piece of hardware might be to blame. The last thing you want to do is replace an expensive part when it wasn't the problem to begin with.
Here are several different tests that might come in handy during the troubleshooting of a problem:

Need More Help?

HelpAs much as I'd love to believe that I have everything covered already on my site, I don't. But that's OK, because as I work to make that more true, there are several ways you can keep in touch.
Below are links to my forum, my Facebook and Twitter pages, and some other great resources on getting more help with your PC.

Maintaining Your Computer

If you've ever fried a CPU because you didn't clean your fan, lost a decade of your digital life to a hard drive crash, or spent four hours trying to remove a nasty virus, you learned a valuable lesson about the need to maintain your computer.
Medical experts remind us that "prevention is the best medicine" so as your personal computer support expert, I'm going to strongly advise that you apply the same logic to your computer!
These resources will help you keep your computer running in tip-top shape for as long as you choose to own it.
  1. Backup Your Data
  2. Update! Update! Update!
  3. Keep Your Computer Clean

Backup Your Data

The most important thing you can do as a computer owner is to consistently and reliably back up the data stored on your hard drive. Hardware used to be the most valuable part of a computer but those bits and bytes are now the real investment.
You've spent huge amounts of money on software and digital music and video, and countless hours authoring documents and organizing your digital files. If you don't regularly backup this information, a serious computer problem could leave you with nothing but a huge feeling of regret.
Now that I've scared you a bit, use these resources to keep your data safe!
  • Best Backup Software Titles
  • Best Online Backup Services
  • Update! Update! Update!

Keeping the software on your computer updated is no longer an optional part of computer ownership. Viruses, worms, junk mail, security breaches, hardware incompatibilities, and software conflicts are all now part of your daily digital life.
Updating your computer with the latest patches, fixes, and device drivers really can keep these annoyances at bay. Updates are freely available on the Internet for just about every antivirus program, email client, operating system, and piece of hardware you could possibly own.
These resources can help you locate these updates and keep your computer out of harm's way.

Keep Your Computer Clean

We all know that most things run a little better when they're clean. Water flows easier when your plumbing is clean, your car's engine runs better if you've been taking care of it, and your dryer does more in less time when you clean out the lint.
Your computer is no different. Keeping your files and folders tidy in your virtual world and clearing the dust and grime that builds up inside and outside your computer all play a part in keeping it running smooth day in and day out.

Optimize Windows XP

Whether by your own installation or on a new computer, Windows XP doesn't come configured just for you. In fact, it probably isn't ready for use out-of-the-box by anyone at all! By default, a number of options are turned on that no one really uses and other settings are configured in ways that benefit very few.
Spend some time using some of these resources to better configure your Windows XP PC. These small changes can help speed up your computer, better prepare you for disaster, and make your daily experience using your computer a little less frustrating.

Hardware & Software Testing Tools

Often times during the troubleshooting process, you can get to a point where you suspect that a particular piece of hardware or part of your computer may be malfunctioning. If you don't have a working spare part around to test with (like the computer fix-it shops do), how can you determine if something is wrong?
Luckily, many of the systems and important pieces of hardware in your computer are easily testable - by you! The diagnostic tools below can help you quickly determine what is or isn't the cause of your problem.
